DETAILS:
The official celebration of Earth Day 2009 will take place in Times Square, New York with special guest of honor, Denis Hayes, Co-Founder of Earth Day.
On April 22, as people everywhere join forces to celebrate our planet and take action to protect it, Mr. Hayes will make an official call to action to citizens of the world.
Mr. Hayes, who was the first Earth Day organizer in 1970 – accompanied by Kathleen Rodgers, President of Earth Day Network , and Matthew Modine, Founder of Bicycle For A Day – will announce the launch of the Green Generation campaign.
The Green Generation campaign is a year-long global initiative leading up to the 40th anniversary of Earth Day 2010. Green Generation is a catalyst for citizens of our earth to partake in one billion volunteer acts of green, from Earth Day 2009 through Earth Day’s 40th anniversary in 2010. The Green Generation campaign will lead thousands of towns and cities toward a new sustainable future based on renewable energy, an end to fossil fuels and the continued growth of a new green economy.
The Ball in Times Square is a universal symbol of new beginnings and change. On April 22, 2009, a new rotating “Earth Ball” will be lowered to mark the launch of Green Generation.
The Earth Ball is a 12-foot geodesic sphere made of Waterford crystal, powered by 32, 256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs. These beautiful and energy-efficient lights will create a palette of more than 16 million vibrant colors and billions of patterns on top of One Times Square. The new solid state lighting technology resulted in a ball that is 10% – 20% more energy efficient than the previous year’s energy-efficient ball, consuming the same amount of energy per hour as it would take to operate two traditional home ovens.
